Growing up in Pennsylvania, I loved driving in the fall when all the leaves were changing colors. Such rich color and texture before the bare trees of winter. Living in Oregon comes with breathtaking cedars and evergreens like you never see on the east coast but the fall colors aren't quite the same. My husband and I were able to enjoy the sunshine and some gorgeous fall foliage while driving through Lance County where we learned some interesting facts about covered bridges. Most of America's covered bridges were built between 1825 and 1875. The bridges weren't covered to protect travelers but to protect the bridge's wood from snow and rain, preventing decay and rot. Covered bridges are icons of days gone by and pioneer life. They were often at the heart of the community, giving shelter for concerts, picnics and political rallies. They were also a place for people to post notices and messages that would be protected from the rain and seen as people traveled in the area.
